Mesothelioma
prognosis
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is
hard to treat. Usually the symptoms would only be seen and
observed in the later stages. One of the leading causes for
this cancer is asbestos. In the year 1903, the medical
community has conceded that exposure to asbestos could cause
mesothelioma. In most cases, the mesothelioma
prognosis is very poor or does not look good but there
is still hope because there are now treatments that could help
add to the life span of the cancer patients.
Mesothelioma
prognosis
Mesothelioma prognosis can
be affected by several factors like the type of the
mesothelioma, size of the cancerous tumor, the location of the
tumor, the different symptoms that will be exhibited, severity
of the symptoms and the stage of the cancer. The age of the
patient and the general heath of the patient would also affect
the prognosis for mesothelioma patients
There are
different types of mesothelioma; it can be pleural,
pericardial, peritoneal or testicular. A series of test would
be needed in order to confirm what type is it. Test can include
biopsies and imaging tests for the patients. The size of the
tumor would also be an indicator on the stage of the cancer.
Depending on the size of the tumor, there are instances that it
can be treated by having the patients undergo some surgical
procedures.

Since there
are different types of mesothelioma, the symptoms would vary
depending on type. The Pleural mesothelioma affects the linings
of the lungs; some of the symptoms are shortness of breath,
chest pain, having difficulty in swallowing, experiencing fever
and excessive sweating during the night. Peritoneal
mesothelioma occurs in the lining of the abdomen called the
peritoneum; symptoms would normally be exhibited in the abdomen
area of the patient like abdominal pain and fluid buildup in
the abdomen area. While the pericardial mesothelioma affects
the linings of the heart, symptoms are also chest pain,
difficulty in breathing and experiencing heart palpitations.
Testicular mesothelioma only has one symptom which is in the
form of testicular lumps.
Severity of
the symptoms would greatly affect the mesothelioma
prognosis because it affects the major organs of the
body. If these organs are damaged severely then there is little
left that one can do. The prognosis is also determined on when
the diagnosis is made. This is because early diagnosis would
also mean that the patient would already be treated as early as
possible. Early diagnosis can make a big difference when it
comes to mesothelioma prognosis and the
survival rate of the patient. Late diagnosis of the disease
would of course lead to a poor prognosis because by then the
cancer could already have spread to the other parts of the body
and the stage would already be in its advanced
stages.
Survival
rate for cancer patients is termed as the “five-year survival
rate”. Despite of any prognosis and survival rate, cancer
patients should never lose their will to live. They should
remain positive because doctors would always do their best to
help their patients.
